    Peas and Beans

    Hello, I am new to the forum and to growing veg. I am growing lots of veg in containers this year and have some hurst green peas - I have put some canes in the container and covered with mesh is this ok? I am not sure how many to put in the pot so have about 12.

    Also I have some tendergreen beans that I have sowed indoors they germinated very quickly and are growing like mad when can I plant them out and should I put support in as I have for the peas. I also have some courgette plants, tumbling tom tomatoes and sweet peppers growing indoors I have no room left on my windowsills so need to start to plant them outside as soon as I can. It is quite exposed where I live and high up so I have been told not to plant out yet.

    You should only be planting out your tender plants when all chance of frosty nights has ended. Hope you can find some where to keep them until then.

      I'd start to harden them off by putting outside during the daytime and bringing in at night - but find a very sheltered spot for them when out. I keep mine on a tray so they're east to lug in and out.
      The pea support sounds fine, can't say if it's the right number in the pot as I don't know how big the pot is! It does sound like quite a lot though. But start off some more in 6 weeks or so to have a succession, they don't produce for all that long and will produce less if they're overcrowded too.

        Tendergreen are dwarf and don't need any support, just plant them about 5" apart and they'll lean on each other

        Mine were sown direct on the lotty about 3 wks ago and are now 2" tall. My gh beans are nice & cosy and growing like mad: 12"-18" already and desperate to go out. Our last frost has been and gone, so now they're hardening off (sitting outside on nice days) for planting out next weekend.

        (they did get wind-burned y'day in these gales we're having: the edges have gone dark, limp and curly, but they'll recover)

          I grow peas and mangetout in containers, works really well. I sow about 4cm apart, and when the plants come up, put some sticks and twigs in at angles for them to grow up. They tend to hold each other up.

            Thanks for the advice I think I will take some of the peas out as 12 is probably a bit too many. I have started to put everything out during the day but have had to bring them in over the weekend as its been very very windy. I am really enjoying growing my own veg its the first time I have done it and am shocked and happy that everything is growing.
