  • Overwintering and rotation?

If one is planting say brassicas for spring harvest should one plant them in this year's brassica bed or next year's brassica bed.

This is a conundrum that I can never quite decide the answer to. I now decide depending on whether I can fit the over-wintering plants into this year's bed without planting into spaces that other brassicas have vacated. So if I have to plant kale into space that summer cabbages have just been harvested, I would rather use another bed. But if there was space left in this year's bed that had stayed empty, I would put the over-wintering brassicas in there. Hope that makes sense

I really struggle to get my head round this too! But I've not really got my head round how I will be rotating on my plot anyway!

This year I've allowed space in this years brassica bed to plant out the kale and PSB I'll be overwintering.

It seems this is a dilemma for everyone then! I thought it was just me being daft... Problem is, we all (I assume) have limited growing space, so planting stuff into next year's beds this year causes a knock on problem of its own... I now go along with what some other ppl have said on here, which is don't get too screwed up about rotation, just avoid planting the same things in the same place twice on the run - apart from potatoes which need a longer gap. I think that's right, unless I've forgotten another veggie group which also needs a longer gap? To be honest, I've got stuff all over the place at the moment, bits here and there all mixed up depending on what needed planting and where there was space at the time - so much for all those paper plans I spent hours over last year... So I try to have a 'basic' plan, and expect it to go a bit awry from late summer onwards.

I usually leave space in this years bed, but not this year. I have no idea where they're going to go. Next years I suppose, wherever that will be. I don't think it really matters that much, some prefer not to follow like with like but I don't think it would hurt if you put them in the same bed as spent summer cabbages .

I just make sure i don't plant them in exactly the same spot, if I'm following brassicas with brassicas.

The summer plants go in what were the gaps in the winter brassica bed IYKWIM
