  • Overwintered chillies

So, following good advice from this forum, I overwintered a few chillies on my sunny western window ledge (cool at night). I am absolutely thrilled with the result and have fruit developing on my Aji lemon (lots!), ring of fire, espelettes and even a couple of Hungarian Hot wax from a plant that was hiding under the Aji Lemon. Compared to waiting patiently till the first fruits develop in late summer on new plants, this makes using chillies for curtains over winter more than worthwhile.

The plan was to move them to the blowaway on the patio. But...well...I hadn't quite realised just how huge they are! The question is- as mature plants, can they manage without being hardened off? Tomorrow is set to be a bit of sun and a bit of cloud here. I am accident prone and the likelihood of me dropping them, bashing into doors etc is quite high if I try to move them in and out for a few days. (This is the sort of luxury problem I am chuffed to have btw)

Hmm, they've been indoors a long time, how upset would you be if you lost them? Plants that have been over wintered (IMO) really need hardening off. I would wait for the weather to warm up for a couple of weeks and then put them out. It's still nippy during the nights. I had one indoors full time one summer, it got so big that I didnt want to risk it being dropped or bashed. C'mon, let's see your pics, you need to show off

Ha, same boat as me NX! It's been a cold spring so mine haven't put on much growth. Start off some lemon drops - they are easy to keep going through winter. Next year you will get an early crop.

My fairy light plant is now on its 4th summer! It has around a 2ft spread, and has lots of chillies and flowers on it!!!

Well, my question has neatly answered itself as I did my back in this morning trying to move a planter. So they'll stay inside for a bit longer.Though shall not be smug about thy chilli plants...

Have spent interesting morning potting things on veeery slowly. Never mind, occupational hazard of gardening, I suppose.

NX- don't give up! The reason my plants were over wintered was because they were so slow last year so thought I'd give it a go.

Both my Scotch bonnet and Californian wonder didn't make it through to the spring they were doing fine until January then died. That would have been their 4 the winter. never mind I've still got a fair few chillis in the freezer enough to last this year.

I had to tie off a few of the branches, as they are quite big!!!!

Apologies for the poor quality photo.

Hi Scarlet, yes it really is like a Bonsai...

I will take a decent photo of it in several weeks when it is in full production!
