  • Over winter onion sets

Do they need covering? Have ordered some red onion sets to over winter and they come halfway through this month. Want to be prepared for when they come

    Thanks

No never covered mine. Mind you I've never grown red ones over winter so someone might advise otherwise.

I covered mine through last winter with mesh tunnels. But that was really to keep pigeons from pulling the shoots out. I suspect they would've comfortably survived the weather otherwise.

I've just planted over 400 sets in seed trays, that are outside on a table covered in net curtains - to stop the squirrels and birds from pulling them out.

Never had to cover ours, red ones seem to do fine, for us in fact better than the brown skinned ones.

I only cover mine for the first month, gives the roots a chance to take hold to stop the birds pulling them up.

              Trying Shakespeare this year

Wilkos have got their sets in LD if you have a branch nearby.

What's the latest you can plant onion sets in the autumn? Not likely to be able to get any until early/mid October this year...
