  • Other Uses Asparagus beds

    Hi Folks

I am trying to utilise every inch of plot i can and as my asparagus bed is on a south facing fence, at the moment i grow sweet peas in the asparagus bed up the fence and get ea great 5m wall every year, My question is would it be possible to grow a fruit for example peach or fig up the fence fan style or would the roots cause problems with the asparagus, the bed size is 750mm wide by 5m long and has 11 crowns in the centre of the bed running the length.
Any other suggestions would be very welcome

    Cheers
    John

Aspargus roots are supposed to be quite shallow so would be disturbed by anything that also had shallow roots or disturbed the soil.

Other plants will be competing for water and nutrients too.

Sweet peas are a good idea as any legume will fix nitrogen in the soil that can be used by your asparagas. You could try other legumes - any kind of peas or beans. When they are over, just cut off at ground level and leave the roots in the soil. Probably a tree would compete with the asparagas for nutrients too much.
Gardening is cheaper than therapy and you get tomatoes

I've got marigolds and toms down the middle of my asparagus bed ......marigolds are meant to deter the aspargus beetle and toms cos they were spare and I had nowhere else to put them

I am considering putting strawberries in the bed, they are quite shallow rooted. What do you think?

Edible peas instead of sweet peas?
