  • Onions!

My onions seem to be doing well - they're popping out of the ground..! Does that mean they're ready to harvest ........?

No, not yet. The bulbs will still be swelling. They will get bigger than what they are now. They will be ready to pull up out the ground once all the leaves start to turn yellow and fall over.

They look great by the way.

You've a while to go yet Susie, I'll just echo what Scoot has said.

          Thanks all

Just not having grown onions before, wasn't sure how much longer to leave them..! But with all this miserable, rubbish, cold, windy, wet weather - it doesn't exactly make you want to go outdoors and pull your onions up, anyway.....!!!!!

I'll do as you all suggested, and leave them longer ..... There's a lot of patience involved with this growing lark..!!

So glad you asked that question, Susie. I didn't think it was time to harvest yet but mine look similar to yours in the photo which gives me relief I'm on the right track
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

Do we wait for both brown stems and the falling over? I only ask as mine have fallen but still green. Have been on holiday so assuming its from the wind and rain but coupled with absolutely no patients from me tee hee

              Fab looking onions SusieG

Yeah, Brown/yellow leaves AND falling over.

My leaves always fall over when they are still green. Just wait until they start to die off and the onions will be ready to pull up.

I certainly wouldn't harvest them for storage yet. However if you need an onion for something there is no reason why you shouldn't eat one.

If any of them had bolted pull them up to try rather than those that haven't

If the top hasn't died down you can eat the green part - after all they are just "spring" onions!

Like Jay-ell said, if they have bolted by all means pull them. If not I would be tempted to leave them, it will be well worth the wait.
