  • Onions - help please!

This is my first year on the plot and I think I've done pretty well considering most of it has been self taught! I got a decent crop of onions and I dried them and they've been hanging in the shed but I've just been in there and it seems quite damp. I've brought them into the kitchen at the moment but what should I do? How to I get then dry again and can I store them in paper bags and if so, where? Thanks everyone e!

Are your actual onions damp? Or just the shed?

Onions need to be somewhere cool and dry to store well - a paper bag is probably not a good idea. Tights or stockings (bear with me) are good for storing onions. Pop one into the toe, tie a knot, pop another one in, tie a knot - carry on till you've filled a leg.

This keeps the onions separate so any rot that may develop doesn't spread. They still need to be hung somewhere cool and airy though.

They were fine yesterday, I just went to get one today and it's like they have condensation on, do you know what I mean? Anyway they've been in the kitchen for a couple of hours and they seem fine. I'll do the tights thing and then put them in the garage, it's probably better in there than the shed, although my husband might moan that it's his garage and why are my tights hanging in there lol! Thanks Rustylady x

I find the garage better than the shed, mainly as it tends to be cooler than the shed which can get hot quickly when the sun comes out.

I just threw all mine in an onion sack and hung them in the shed. All seem to be ok
