  • onions falling over - did some serious weeding yesterday

Ok fab set of onions all falling over now. Had to do some serious weeding yesterday so assume I've taken out the weed roots that were holding them up. What do I do now?

Just leave them be! They'll fall over anyway when they're ready. Then you leave them until the leaves die back and lift them to ripen.

Give them a good watering so the soil resettles round their roots.

I would water them first but with all this rain it will of done the job for you, then 'slightly' earth them up and I only mean SLIGHTLY. Not the type of earthing up you do for spuds, just enough to make then stable and upright again, if they were onion sets you originally planted then next year just make sure they are planted up to the top of the bulb.

My mistake the first year was that I planted them too shallow and had the same problem after weeding, suspect that most people plant them too shallow the first time as its tempting to plant them like hyacinth bulbs.
