bout 3-4 inches.. do i just get one onion from one set?

also what sort of seeds (or onion sets) do i get to make silverskin onions?.. prob a daft question seeing as the sets are almost as big as silverskin and it won't be worth the time or money buying sets just to make tiny onions

what onions are they? Usually it's one onion per set except with shallots - not sure about silverskin - probably need to be grown from seed

yes they're a standard white onion then - should produce one large one to each set

thanks for that sms, just checked and unwins do them so i'll order some of them.. i LOVE silverskin pickles (or silverkrin as my gran used to call them)

excellent, i'll go and sow some then.. is there any reason why i shouldn't put onions in the same bed as say lettuces and broccoli? will the onion acid affect them or anything

That I'm not sure about - I have a book back at home and will look later but only thing I can remember is that you shouldn't plant onions with peas - I recall that because I have some tall climbing peas up the side of my onion bed but hadn't read that warning at the time. I've decided to let them be and see what happens

I think Carrots are okay with onions and lettuce is always referred to as a fill in catch crop so should be okay any where

I have a few onions near my carrots, as I heard they deter carrot fly.

You need about 4 onions per carrot for this. But every little helps.
