  • onion/shallot crossing

I have been given some sprouting shallots. I wanted to put them on the ground to get the seeds for next year. Trouble is, I already have onions out for the same reason. Are the two likely to cross? Will I end up with 'shanions'!

    Eh up.

I've given over one of my regular beds in the canal garden for seed saving, and am hoping that the onions will flower at slightly different times. If not, I'm intending to pot them up into separate pots once they start to flower, and spread them round the place to try and keep the pollen away. This goes for any stuff I'm trying to save seeds for....

Am a bit confused as to why you would want seeds from shallots, just pick the whole clump when ready, leave to dry and then next year plant the smaller shallot bulbs and off you go again.

I don't have any shallots to plant, just these few that are sprouting.
