    onion family roots

    thought any new peeps to growing might like to see my pics,as some have been asking about growing in modules,
    here are some of my garlic roots,started of in modules a few weeks ago,now in the ground,
    been trying to post them last 2 weeks,and just found out how to operate new system,
    the first one is eleghant garlic,shown laying down in a seed tray,
    the other 2 pics are overwintering sensui,
    it just goes to show what is going on under the ground before the green shoots appear above the soil,so just be patient when planting direct into soil,as they are only establishing their roots

    Alot going on there alright!! Related question too...here in Ireland we are having a very mild November and my garlic has mostly sprouted already, as well as my Radar onions...Will they be all right...?
    Funnily enough, the shallots don't seem to have done as well as the garlic and Onions...?
    I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

      The idea is to get them going before winter sets in. Trouble is, winter has forgotten it is supposed to arrive this year so far. Garlic needs a period of vernalisation and that will undoubtedly come before long. The overwintering onions are supposed to be hardy. With the weather being so mild up until now, the growth may be too soft to survive the cold weather but no point in worrying about it. If they survive, they survive, if they don't, we'll have to buy onions for a few weeks before the maincrop ones are ready.

        Thanks Aberdeenplotter....So accepting of the fate about to befall us!!
        So the garlic should be fine..? Just the onions I may have to mourn....

          If you have the overwintering onions,they will be fine,if they summer one's ,no point in wasting them,have an experiment,is it possible to either,put them in seperate pots,and pop them in a greenhouse,or shelterd place,[last year i had my onions on strings hanging in the greenhouse all winter long,incuding the bad weather we experienced,and they kept just fine],so i wonder if yours might,just keep the soil/compost on the dryer side,or they bound to rot,failing that,could you build some protection around them in the ground and fleece over,anythings worth a try sooner than resigning yourself to loosing them,
          as for this years shallots,mine grew into large bulbs,but not all split as supposed to,and ave lost a lot since due to neck rot,
          all these things come to try us,

            I think they will both be fine. Thought it best to soften you up though just in case

                I think they are all sprouting a fine Movember (moustache)!!!!!

                    My garlic is in pots outside the greenhouse, growing like wild fire. My onions in the ground are growing good and I have some in pots in the greenhouse aswell, all seem to be doing great. Will get some pics up tommorow for you to see. Will plant out the garlic tomorrow I think. Got to pot up some other bits and bobs as well.

                      Remember the banana shallots from Wilkos that turned out to be pretend banana shallots? There is no top growth on them yet at all, I'm just hoping there's plenty of root growth down below!

                        ooooohh definately will be,you could have a wee peek at 1,gently ease it to one side,sort of disturb the soil,
                        as was said a while ago about banana shallots planted from supermarkets,only go to seed,so maybe you could let some go to seed and rear your own babys.

                          They are overwintering ones (Radar) but was just worried because of the mild winter resulting in the strong growth so far... As I said both garlic and onions are well sprouted but shallots seem subdued so far...

                          Whatever happens, I am now bunkering down preparing for this forthcoming (potentiall) disaster that Aberdeen speaks of..

                            Nooooh, just don't be too disappointed if the weather does for them. It has no right being so mild at this time of year and who knows how it will affect things later.
