  • ONE Tomato/pepper plant for SEVEN QUID!!

Hey guys, not posted in a wee while so thought I'd share something I found amusing with you!

As you may know i now work in the Q&B garden centre and I'm loving it. But I couldn't help but snort when our new delivery of fresh plants came in.

    ONE tomato, chilli or sweet pepper plant for 6.98!!!!! Don't get me wrong, they look healthy and so on but I have;
    10 garden pearls,
    10 sub arctic plenty,
    5 moneymakers,
    5 gardeners delight,
    6 beefsteak,
    10 harbingers,
    and a few tomatillos
in my greenhouse that are coming on leaps and bounds and they never cost me a penny due to the glorious seed swap!!

Dont get me started on the other veggie "plugs" we sell...

I am trying to convert all my customers into growing them all from seed!
Serene she stand amid the flowers,
And only count lifes sunny hours,

Ouch!! That's a bit steep isn't it? What size pot are they in?
Our little local hardware shop is selling them for £2 each in 3" pots which I thought was a bit pricey!

I looked out four of my extra moneymakers to give to a friend today - maybe I should sell them instead :P

Fnar Fnar fnar. Hmmm, I think next year I'll put a sign outside the door - £3 a pot. I gave 12 excess ones away on Freecycle this month. No wonder they were snapped up!!!

OH was at B&Q last night and rang me to tell me the price! I was gobsmacked! Surely people walk round and realise you can pick up a packet of seeds for a quid or so, rather than £7 for one plant??

And the worrying thing is that am sure they will all be soold at that price too... people ju ping on the veggie growing bandwagon and prob think that's a fair price for them! Muppets.

The lady up the road from us sells her excess toms for 25p, maybe I need to have a quiet word in her ear, she could be paying off her mortgage soon if she plays her cards right! lol

I must admit to buying a chilli plant also a tomato plant from B&Q last year due to my greenhouse not being in a fit state to use properly

I paied the same price as mentioned above. They were both in nice 10 inch pots with a saucer that clips on the bottom so easy to move one handed! lol

The plants were a good 10-12 inches high and nice and bushy, mature healthy plants, I got sooo many chilli's and a good few toms from these plants.

Needles to say it was a case of needs must last year! Not this year though!! I have about 10 mdifferent types of tomatoes growing and several different chilli typs and soo many other things all from seed.

Last years bought plants were a late season practice run for me to get my hand back in after many years not growing anything! I do think the prices were and are a bit steep considering how easy it is to grow these plants from seed and the fact that you can buy perfectly good 10-12 inch pots for 99P each if you know where to look. Also a bit of compost to go in a pot that size would not cost much either. I can't see the logic in the pricing!

I'm off to a local nursery today, I expect to pay around 60p per veg / herb plant.

If the tomatoes are the ones I saw at the weekend, they are in large-ish pots, are about 40cm tall, very compact and have two or three trusses of ripening tomatoes crammed onto the plant.

Now mine only have a few flowers coming on - if I'd tended to plants to get all those fruits ready for picking using grow light, heat, flying them across the world then I'd charge £7 each!!!!
The proof of the growing is in the eating.

Is that not mis-priced? Surely you get six or more plugs for £7?

If they were plugs then yes, but these are not little plugs....
