  • Old stuff

I am drawing the plans for next year's season and find I have the urge to try and grow some old cottage veg.

    I am looking at growing:

    Rampion
    Spignel Meum
    Skirret

Do any one here tried growing any? if so, any tips on flavour or condition?

Wow CD, that's adventurous of you... I'll admit i had to look up all three and if others are intrigued they could start with these short cuts:

    Rampion
    botanical.com - A Modern Herbal | Rampion

    Spignel Meum
Spignel (Meum athamanticum) | MGS Heirloom Seeds

    Skirret
Sium sisarum - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Def one up on kohl rabi, why did they fade to obscurity? And where are you getting seeds from?

Lots of damage to the usual root veg made me look for some alternatives that got good resistant to all the fauna reside in my grounds. Also I don't need huge crop just for me and the better halve.

I intend to order some from Thomas Etty.

        Brilliant site at

Where else can you read vegetable lists from the Thirteenth Century or come across a variety of lettuce named Drunken Woman?
I see he warns that Skirret provokes both wind and lust so do let us know how you get on!
