  • oh dear my cucumber is flowering

    Hi

my cucumber plants are only 4-5 inch high not even in their final pots and they have already started to produce flower buds, how do I deal with this, have usually got flowers when they are a foot or so high.
I am right in thinking they are not ready for the unheated greenhouse because its too cool at night as I have them inside right now.

    please help

    thanks!

I'd suggest buying a max/min thermometer (B&Q do a good digital one for £10 - although my first one to a different design only lasted two winters).

Using my max/min thermometer under a fleece at night my unheated greenhouse has been 6 degC warmer than the forecast minimum outside temperature this week - that is a min of 8 degC last night, 10 degC the night before and 8 degC before that.

I think this is good enough for me to risk my toms, gerkins and courgettes on the floor overnight.

I started my cucs off in an unheated greenhouse and they too are around 4 to 5inch high (but no flowers yet) min temp has been 5 degs and they are still okay, admittedly i am furhter south but yours should be okay, just watch the weather reports for cold nights. You should be able to keep the doors open during warm, sunny days to allow the pollenating bugs in but remember to close them in the evening to keep the warmth in. When it is a sunny day the temp rises to 40 degs with the doors shut so watch out for scorching and water the ground inside the GH to raise the humidity.

My cucs, tomatoes and chillis' are in my unheated greenhouse about 4 weeks now and are doing fine. There are some buds on one cuc and also a couple of my toms.

Don't worry about it, my cuc did the same and it went on growing happily away on the windowsill. My first flower was male so I took it off but the other flowers have been female and have cucs growing behind them
