  • OCA (oxalis tuberosa)

I would like to try and grow oca. Has anyone any experience of growing it and where can I obtain some tubers. Many thanks.

I've just asked a similar question on this Forum but can't work out how to link it to yours. If you look for "Ever grown oca?" you may find it!
I bought some tubers at the RHS show in Cardiff in April and its still growing in a pot in the greenhouse. Its too early to harvest it yet so I have no real experience of Oca.
Real Seeds sell the tubers in December I believe.

Thanks veggiechicken. I have found and read your post. Just found a friend who is growing some for the first time this year and will wait to see his results. He has also promised me a few tubers to try for myself so I hope his trial is successful.

        Hi

Oca needs the frost to kill the foliage, what happens then is that the starch gets drawn into the tubers and this doubles the tuber size in the space of a few weeks. It looks horrible but it really is what needs to happen. If it doesn't get frosted you will not get the larger tubers.

A friend furtled a few for us today. They are like potatoes with a lemony finish. Waiting for a decent frost here to finish them. We just steamed them with other veg for our roast buffalo beef dinner........yum

          Prefer good cow beef tho!

          Loving my allotment!

I'm currently bulking mine up after most of the ones I had in storage went mouldy last year...they're not hard to grow, I have one in a pot, another in a hanging basket (both totally neglected, and competing for space), another in a trodden-on spot in the lottie - all are doing well !
I got mine from Real Seeds, they do all sorts of different colours. Nice taste, a bit fiddly to wash.
There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.

Head-hunted member of the Nutter's Club - can I get my cranium back please ?
