    Not sure what to do?

    Hello, I'm struggling to work out what to do this year. I've been growing my own for the last 8-9 years with hit and miss results as we all do (I'm in north west Kent and we seem to have our own mini weather system). Last year April was like summer and I got some great beans, peas, cucumber and onions, but the courgettes didn't like the cooler weather in real summer.)
    This year we've so far had a few weeks of really warm weather (today is the first time I think It's rained since the snow in Jan-Feb) but now they are giving mixed reports, some saying cold some saying mild.
    I'm not sure what I can get away with sowing now (I have a few spare spaces in the house for trays but no outside greenhouse or coldframe). I really want to get going as I'm now nearly 35 wks pregnant (and our first turned up at 36wks) so a head start on the veggies would help me out for sure this year so I'm not attempting to sow everything later on as obviously I'm going to have my hands full in prime sowing time!
    I have seeds of all kinds of veggies/salad etc but we are giving potatoes a miss this year.
    Any advice would be fab! xxx

    I'd suggest things that need as little attention as possible with a little one on the way such as radishes, onion sets, beetroots, carrots, kale The kind of things that you wont really have to consider much unless we have a real dry hot spell or freezing conditions. It's really all down to how much you think you can manage assuming worst case scenarios

      well sow vegatable that can cope with the cold - i.e. brassicas, peas, broad beans etc start them off on a windowsill, as soon as they are poking ther heads throught the soil put them outside - however try and get some propagator lids for them (there around 68p in wilko), just incase we have any frosts!

        I agree with Matt, I'd get going now and invest in some fleece.

          sow as much direct as you can, broad beans now, maybe beetroot, leafy veg, spinach etc. all the stuff like courgettes, french beans etc can wait until the end of april at least, so you have a couple of months there.
          throw some thyme in too

            Thank you for all the replies. I managed to sow a few leeks and started some tomatoes on the window sill.. then was taken into hospital! I then spent the next four weeks in and out of hospital and on 8th april had a baby boy weighing 6lb 9oz! Since then I've been putting baby in a carrier wrap and sowing courgettes, lettuce, spinach, beans and squash with the help of my five year old son! Not sure if we will get anything from it this year, but I've already grown and produced something very special this year! x

                CONGRATULATIONS and welcome to the world baby Cherry Blossom (Bud?).....crap year for veggies so far, can't help that, but babies are very happy in a papoose....keep trying cos at this rate Veggies will be expensive this season.
