    Not a single ripe tom this year

    Well I have plenty of toms on the tomato plants and plenty of flowers but I have not had a single ripe fruit because of the lack of sun. This time last year it was fantastic.

    Anyone else got any ? (except Monty Don who gets everything perfect)

    I've had some but nowhere near as many as normal for this time of year. I did plant out a bit late though and the weather hasn't helped. Not my worst year though, remember one year picking my first ones on the August Bank Holiday weekend. Am expecting them to come quickly when they get properly under way (the runner beans have been like that!) but if not then I do love green tomato chutney and the sweet chilli dipping sauce we love still works for green ones although it has to be said the red ones look prettier.

    Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

    Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

          Mine are the same, but I put it Dow to them being planted late. I know a lot if others over in the allotment have some lovely. Huge red tomatoes. And due to the lovely welsh weather,I'm shocked. Have to find out their secret!

            On the plus side you do at least have fruit even if they fail to ripen over time, you can still use them to make a nice chutney

              I didn't get round to growing toms this year, partly because we were in the UK when I would have had seedlings, but also , for the past 3 years we've had blight.

              I've been watching our neighbours tomato plants with interest thinking flippin typical....no signs of blight at all so far this year....and then noticed, he too has yet to have a ripe tomato!

              Very late indeed Marb ...even down here!

              Having said that, we're supposed to have 8C tonight....it's not surprising the veg are on strike poor things.

                  Loads - but then we've had a heatwave and a drought.
                  The majority have had blossom end rot, until the drought broke and then they started to split as well.

                    I've had lots too but they are in a tunnel and we have had some very hot weather. Some of the main plants are nearly finished but still have double and single truss plants to produce more.

                      Plenty of flowers and plenty of small green tomatoes, but not a single ripe one yet (out of 18 plants) .....so I can empathise with you Marb.

                        I've had a few Sungold, both in the greenhouse and outside, and I've got one Garden Pearl and one Sweet Aperitif just starting to turn as of yesterday. Totem, which is normally fairly early, has loads of green fruit but nothing looking at all red yet, and the others clearly have some way to go before ripening.

                        There are some more chilly nights forecast over the weekend, so if you are in a vulnerable area, get ready with the fleece...

                        You could always try putting the odd ripe banana near the plants to assist ripening.

                          It has been a bad year, my seedlings just came to halt at the 2inch stage for ages, the night time temps in my green house rarely got to over 10 degrees right up until late June. Since then they have grown well, lots of fruit but sill green. I have had a handful of sungold in the last few days. My gardeners delight are much bigger than last year for some reason.

                            we know, we have had a summer of those types of temperatures, its cold again outside today, another heavy jumper/warm coat day, just as well OH never bothered getting summer clothes out as highest temp has been around 18/19deg that I can remember, summer just never arrived...
