    Not bean running

    Help. I put my 16" runner bean outside to harden, from my heated greenhouse. It wasn't a perticular nice day and isn't looking to good. To worried to put it out again,I want to get it ready for outside but it likes my greenhouse as much as me.

    Any help or any runner bean advice would be grrrrrrrrrreat.

    Hi Green lad,
    Is that Runner "BEAN" - as in singular? They ARE very good croppers in the right conditions, but you may struggle to get a decent crop from just one plant.
    As to your problem, you are in a northerly area, so it will be a bit later before you can safely plant him out. I'd pot him on into a long pot (one that a rose has been in would be ideal - go and have a rummage at your local garden centre), give him a nice bamboo cane to climb up, and just wait till the warmer weather arrives!
    But, I'd also suggest planting another half a dozen or so seeds! You have plenty of time for them to come up and you'll get a much better crop!

      I haven't even sown most of my French beans, they don't like it too cool or windy at all. I've sown 4 runners for Mr Z and 6 Frenchies for me...all are in the greenhouse as it's not warm enough for them outside yet.

        I haven't planted my Frenchies yet, but the runners (brought on in the stayput covered with bubblewrap) I hardened off last week and planted out on Monday when I built the wigwam. They seem to be doing ok, especially with all this rain. They were nothing like as tall as yours GL. I'd say about 5 inches.

          My beans are just beginning to show. It is quite mild here today, and we are supposed to be past the frost date (Late April for me), but the wind is a killer I think. I have started putting the germinated ones out for hardening off in the garden whihc is much more sheltered.
          I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
          Now a little Shrinking Violet.

            Cheers folks beans it is I have 8. I'll keep them safe till it warms up a bit. Thanks again can't wait to eat some of this stuff. Just started never eaten my own veg yet.
