  • Not able to water toms

I offered to water friends outdoor whilst she is away, but unfortunately her patio door lock has broken! And we are unable to get out there to do this, they looked 'droopy' yesterday, we did have a shower of rain in night.

Will they recover, she is due back later in week?

More rain forecast for the SE today and on Thursday, so they should make it ok. Fingers crossed

If the tomatoes are in open ground they should be fine - if they are planted in containers outside, best get someone to shin over the fence :-)

PS have you tried pushing the handle of the patio door up when you turn the key ? that sometimes does the trick.

They are in containers! Not possible to get over railings as hedge in front! Don't want to 'not to be able' to be to close door.

But thanks, I'll pray for rain!

Do you have a hose. Could you direct a spray of water over the hedge that way?

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,

Tomatoes in pots won't do very well even if it rains, as a lot of the water will land on the leaves and not the soil. Ladders to go up and over the hedge?

Perhaps drop your neighbor's a text message - see if there is any trick to opening the recalcitrant door lock ?

Unfortunately she is in America, I have spoken to her daughter, who watered them on Saturday! She says the door broke on Sunday

The neighbours immediately next door are also away! Cos I would have used their hose to water them!

Trying to think of a bright idea, unsuccessfully!

Yes but I'm 5 houses away!

You're in a difficult situation, Dorothy. Nothing much you can do, I suspect. Not unless the daughter sorts out the door.

Sounds like a locksmith is needed. But who's going to arrange and pay for one, and will it be done in time to save the tomatoes?

I wouldn't worry any more, once the daughter clarifies what happened it will be obvious that it isn't your fault if they don't survive.
Disappointing, but what can you be expected to do, if the daughter isn't getting the lock mended? Nothing!
