  • Normans Mum

Hi. I recently treated myself to a heated propagator (and very nice it is too). All my other seedlings which I started off in there have done well except the broccoli. they seemed to grow quite quickly, but have now gone very spindly and quite leggy. What went wrong, does any one have any ideas Would I perhaps be better to just try some more in a seed tray? Any suggestions greatly appreciated

Hi Norman's mum - could you call your threads something other than 'Norman's mum' all the time!

Your brassicas do not need to be germinated in a heated propagator. A cool greenhouse will do for brassicas.

Ooops. Sorry, was meant to be titled 'leggy seedlings'.

To much heat and not enough light at a guess.

Definitely that. They are very tough (hardy) veg, and don't need any heat to germinate. If they get it, they shoot up too fast, as you found.

Killing your broccolli with kindness ! As soon as your seedlings are of a 'good size' remove them from the propagator and get them into the best light around. You may be able to save them by repotting deeper in the larger size pots. Cheers, Tony.
