  • no heads on cabbages

    Hi,
I haven't been on in ages so hi to all.

my question is, I planted cabbages before xmas and no heads appeared at all, i still have them in the ground, but still no head, the leaves are very big.

I have now also planted, green cabbage and red cabbage, and the leaves are growing fine, but how long does it take for the head to start forming. the newly planted ones are about six inches high if not more. I have never grown these before, so would appreciate some help. I do n't want to waste the space if heads are not going to form

thanks all , what a fab day for being in the garden or down the lottie, and I've done both today.pheww

When you say planted, do you mean sowed? As in sowed the seed?

If so, then they are very young still.
Even then, some varieties don't heart up at all. They are still perfectly edible, and certainly aren't a waste of space.

    What varieties have you got?

      Hi,

Yes sorry I mean sowed, I haven't kept the packets so can't remember the varieties.
I sowed green, back before xmas, and the stalks are so long now, they are not going to get heads on them, and the leaves are huge.
The red and green were sowed about early april, and are looking long and leggy already, when i say that i mean the leaves are off the ground with about 1/2 and inch of stalk from the bottom leaf to the earth, if that makes any sense.

Xmas is the wrong time for sowing ... they won't come to much I don't expect.

April is the usual time for sowing ... I guess they are autumn cabbages? Plant them out in June/July ... and they won't be hearting up for some time yet.

Just make sure they are very firm in the ground, if cabbages are in loose soil they won't form hearts, just stay as loose leaves. If you have clay soil, just firm them in well with your hands and water them in, but if you have sandy soil then you need to tread them in a bit to get the soil firm enough. Same applies to sprouts too.
