    Cauliflower plants are BIG.

Cabbages will work though...they're like goldfish. Grow only as big as their home allows

Pixie is a small cabbage that can be sown at this time of year. I can't advise on caulis as I have never managed to successfully grow one.

How old is your niece - and does she have any gardening experience?
If the answers are "young" and "No" I don't think caulis are a good idea, and I'm not convinced about cabbages either.
I find Caulis are difficult to grow - and seldom look like the cauliflowers on the shop.
Cabbages would need netting to keep the butterflies away which would mean covering the whole bed.
