    A friend of mine uses a few layers of newspaper in the bottom of potatoe grow bags

    to aid drainage is that a good idea

    I don't see how that will aid drainage. Newspaper is often put in the bottom of trenches under beans etc as it helps water retention.

      Newspaper will absorb a lot of water then become a sticky mess. I should have thought putting more holes in the grow bag would be a better idea if you wish to improve drainage.

        The grows back I have don't have any drainage holes (that I remember) but are made of a woven roughly fabric, so I guess that they "drain" all over the surface, in which case something moisture absorbing at the bottom is probably fine. I put a layer of manure in mine ...
