    Newspaper pots, safe?

    helloooo

    i've been loitering in the background for a while & normally find the answers i need without posting!

    But today I was about to make my first huge batch of newspaper pots for my tom seedlings when my dad queried the coloured inks/petroleum? Now i'm all confused, as we put newspaper on the compost..... i'm guessing when broken down it's safe?

    Any thoughts? i've tried the website for our local n.paper but no joy

    I "only" have 40ish plants to do and didn't want to use up plastic pots!

    Hi

    I believe they all use non-toxic inks now - I think if they were dangerous we'd have to read them with gloves and masks on these days.

    What does he think will happen?

      lol my thinking too. prob more dangerous the stuff that gets written in most of them i'll keep going & if i grow another appendage be4 the years out i'll let u know

        I'm in the middle of making yet another batch now, and I literally use hundreds of them each year - with no ill effects I'm aware of. Plants grow well in them, and the pots literally melt into the soil. Far better than plastic.
        A good beginning is half the work.
        Praise the young and they will make progress.

          I'm going to be making some when I find some newspaper - we had a tidy up before we went away and I can't find any anywhere. I've completely run out of small pots and I need to sow.

                    It woould be great if I had any newspapers . I'm too tight to buy one, I read them online, and we don't get any free ones round here. The girl next door delivers the adscene, but not to our road.
                    I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

                      Modern inks are generally all based on soya, and would you believe vegetable dyes ! Glossy pages = petroleum solvents like toulene and nasty pollutants like cadmium and lead. It is not the generation that ingests these that is likely to suffer, it is their offspring's DNA - epigenetic damage.
                      Barley, don't you know any of your neighbours ? Or if you are that shy, can't you steal from their bins when they put the papers out for recycling ?
                      There's no point reading history if you don't use the lessons it teaches.
