A new thread for growing Garlic

Hi to all,

I know there has been countless threads on here relating to growing garlic plants from the cloves!!

I know that the time to start growing is now, so last night, I went to Morrisons and bought a standard whole garlic. I have taken it home and broken off all the cloves, i havent peeled off the skin, as if im going to cook them, which I assume should be how you plant them, with skin still on.

Now reading the different threads, i have noticed some say about putting the seeds on damp cloth to start rooting. But do they mean seed as in the clove, do I just stand the individual clove with skin still on, with the fuzzy bit face down on the damp cloth, to leave it to route, then when small routes, then put into compost in pots? in green house?

Then how long should I leave them, before i transfer to the ground from the pot? How long should I let the new plant grow before putting in the ground?

Advice please, and would be welcomed!!

I put my garlic in a few weeks ago (too early?) and it is growing brilliantly already. The cloves were specific seed cloves I think from my local Allotment Association. As TwoSheds says, just stick it in the ground, with the tip just below or just poking through the surface.

Agreed - separate the cloves from the buld, plant them 6" apart in each direction with the tops just below the surface and just leave them to do their own thing. If it gets dry in May next year, water to hepl the bulbs swell - and thats about it really - one of the easiest veg to grow

For clarification, the cloves are not seeds. The easiest way to grow garlic is to stick a clove in the soil at this time of year. You can grow from seed but I've never seen the seed for sale.

I hate it when you guys say that!! I'm doomed to failure Its like when someone gives you directions to somewhere and says "you can't miss it"!!

Garlic and onions are going in this weekend regardless of weather so fingers crossed

Even I am managing to grow garlic so it must be easy! I just stuck it in the ground and in tubs and waited. Lots of green shoots now

Just stick them in! go for it- a fab and easy crop to grow.
The bigger the clove you plant the better the head of garlic you will harvest!!!!
It needs a cold spell to insure the cloves divide properly ......

Thanks for the advice everyone, Mine will be going in the ground then on Saturday, unless it snows!!! It is UK after all, so you never know, lol!!

Hopefully I will have a nice crop for next year, will start my ginger also, anyone know when the best time to put ginger eyes, into pots? How much of the root do you need to put into compost?

Garlic is usually grown from cloves which are planted either direct into soil or into pots.
Certain seeds can be started on damp blotting paper, but the only ones I do this with are parsnips!

I have never really grown anything before but, having built a raised bed in October, I didnt want it sitting empty untill next year so i filled it with garlic and onions.

The instructions on the garlic said bury em about 3cms deep and every one of em has come up. So far so good.

I hope its not jumping the gun a bit but, If I can do it anyone can.....

as are mine, both garlic and onions in raised beds, and the excess in pots and modules, now so big i am planning on putting them in the ground soon, however, what is the LATEST i can put them in, bearing in mind i am down south which rarely gets cold cold until jan/feb

nope, any garlic will do, for a first try.
