  • A new sight

we started using the highland burgundy potatoes today, a red skin, when you peel them they look white, but when you cut them, the centres are a deep red colour, they went into what OH was making ,so now we have loads of pink cockaleekie soup and have a lovely flavour. on sunday ,when we have the roast, we will be using charlotte, highland burgundy and blue salad tatties, so we will have red, white and blue, with the rainbow carrots of white, yellow, purple and red, it will make an unusual sight, but oh so tasty...

I shall be too busy scoffing...., will have to wait a bit for the finishing touches such as the parsnips, as these had to be started in the greenhouse this year with the long cold spring, but with what has been hoarded in the freezer we will be happy little bunnies over the cold months to come..i will take a photo of a peeled highland burgundy as they look amazing and we only planted them on an impulse as we had never seen or heard of them before..

they were bought at a big garden centre on the way a couple of miles from Ayr, the name starts with a G but I cannot remember the rest, also got the salad blues at the same time, that's the first time I haven't had to send off for them (they taste amazing), so it seems I did well this year..

they were unaffected, I saw no visible damage, but got a bit of scab from using last years tattie compost, just a bit.., but I have to grow mine in 50ltr tubs now as I cant do the digging, just tip them out onto a tarpaulin and sift through, we have a large toad in veg patch and there is a bigger one in the back garden, I have seen both within minutes so I know its not the same one, bigger toad is greener and smaller one is browner, if that makes sense, but I reckon they are well fed on crop munchers...

Do potatoe varieties that specifically mention a location e.g Highland grow OK further south or are they bred for the colder areas of the country?

                    Unfortunately Lumpy - Yes.

I had to move to Hungary, so I could grow Sarpo Mira spuds.

i finally got round to taking photos of the highland burgundy and blue salad before OH has them cooked and dished up. you can see by the colour that they make real odd chips/roasties and mash.. and you would not believe how good they taste, a really lovely flavour..
