    new seed potatoes

    Probably a silly question - in fact, almost certainly a silly question - but what exactly is a seed potato?
    Could I carefully look after the tiny new potatoes that are left over when I've harvested this year's potatoes (harvest being rather early because the lack of rain has collapsed my poor potato plants) - or is there some special ingredient that makes the baby potatoes into 'seed' potatoes?

    I think I'm going to give up posting on the Vine... I know my questions/notions may be pretty banal but it seems I never get a reply...

      You didn't give anyone much time, did ya ?

      I save my own seed, picking the nicest ones from a harvest, not tiny ones - about hen's egg size. I save them in the salad drawer of my (spare) fridge for up to 6 months

        I have thought about doing this but not having a spare fridge I am worried the gannets will eat them!

          A seed potato is simply a potato kept for seed. It's as simple as that. Best not to keep very small spuds, I personally look for spuds about the size of a large hen's egg.
