  • New Legislation on Plant Protection Products

I was on the wilko website for slug pellets and this was posted in the description: "New government legislation is being brought in for plant protection products". Anyone familiar with what this might be about?

I think it means that some chemicals are under review or banned or being banned as they're harmful to wildlife & us. Theres new laws against the use of some chemicals that were once considered ok to use. Plant protection is insecticides etc....

Thanks for that. I was curious as to what chemicals might be coming into review. A cursory google was not particularly insightful. Maybe they will have a go at metaldehyde...

They've already banned a lot of products - but don't know how I'd grow anything if i couldn't use slug pellets

I've had pretty good results with ferric phosphate for slug pellets although it does cost a good bit more. I am not particularly keen on metaldehyde because it is toxic to pets and wildlife.

I got told years ago by my Auntie, that porridge oats work. Each time I have used them they seem to work for me The slugs eat them, cruel away, the porridge oats dry them up and the slug explodes apparently

I do know that any time soon Bayer who make Provado are changing the active ingredient to a substance is is considered safer, I've got to change my C.O.S.H assessments for work when this happens.

Also slug pellets had the active ingredient changed last year, I don't have the details, but the pellets from Growing Sucess are the safest for the environment.

Growing Success appears to use ferric phosphate now. I use Wilko's own brand (cheaper) and it does work well, at least for me.

I was in my local garden center recently looking for greenhouse candles, couldn't see them anywhere. When I stopped one of the staff members and asked if they had any, the answer was that they had been banned by the EU.

He then went on to say to me, "have you noticed the large gaps in the shelves, that's because every day we get further notification of some other insecticide/fungicide/herbicide that the EU have banned and we have to remove from the shelves" so I went online and bought 3 tins of greenhouse candles off a retailer on fleabay.

... is the day they make vacuum cleaners

Difficult isn't it? But this is exactly how the farmers feel when we fight to get neonicitonoids etc banned... It's a real dilemma, not sure how we address it

Polenta works in the same way apparently.

The whole withdrawal of these products is supposed to protect both us and the environment.
Let's not let this thread become political but try and help each other focus on the alternatives which are available.
I'm sure banning DDT went down like a lead ballon in it's day too.

I do find it hard to squash them, but I really hate them! I really don't like killing anything, but they make me so mad, they're just so greedy and inconsiderate!

perhaps the tiniest pinch of salt on them? still not the most swift of deaths though.
