ihave purchased 3 nicola potatoes for chritmas growing i have had them in the fridge. im looking to grow them in sacks in the greenhouse. do i need to chit them or can they go straight in the compost. i also have some left over pentland javelin which were grown this spring. do they need chitting also. should i stagger the sowing

Whoever you ask you will get a different answer. I always chit my early potatoes. (Early means those with the shortest growing time, which I presume you are using for your Xmas potatoes)Comment

I kept a few earlies for (hopefully) growing for Christmas. I'm not sure when to plant them, last year I obviously left it too late, as they were nowhere near ready (then the frost did for them, but that's another story).
Does anyone know - is mid-August a good time to put then down?My hopes are not always realized but I always hope (Ovid)

Farmers chit nothing Hawthornes.
All chitting does is get things on ahead a bit.
Like - you can chit your earlies on the windowcill and get them planted into the ground / container a few weeks ahead of what what would possible straight into the cold ground.
If you plant your unchitted potatoes they will get on fine, they will chit in the ground, it will all just be a few weeks konger in the ground.
I would just plant them as they ear.
I do chit my potatoes early in the year as that means I get them planted out a few weeks ahead of the game. At this time of year time is not a rush so just plant them.
I do hope this makes sense.
