  • Are my tomatoes cold??

I put some tumbling tom tomatoes out last week they had been hardening off outside and in a plastic greenhouse at night. I put two in a teracotta pot on a south facing windowsill and two in a large basket again south facing. I put the rest in a variety of pots in the plastic greenhouse. As you can see the ones I put outside have dark patches. I have fed them with growmore granuals not sure how regularly about twice I think once when repotted and again today to see if that helps. I am worried that if I bring them into my house it will be a bit of a shock for them with the change in temperature. Some of the ones in the greenhouse look a bit dark in places too. Its not been that warm here about 14c today and quite wet. What do you think??

I think tomatoes need a constant (ie day and night) temp of about 16c to grow well

Mine are all outside now, some have been for about 3 weeks and they're ok.

Not necessarily TS maybe I'm just lucky - or you might get a better harvest with constant temperatures.

Yea mine look very similar but I think they will eventually get oer it, I am hoping anyway.

Just means they may crop a bit later.

Ironically my ones in the ground are superb

My understanding was that toms need to be over 10 degrees constantly to be growing well so it may well be that if it's been 14 degrees during the day they haven't been getting warm enough to counteract the drop in temperature in the night.

I've had toms outside for weeks now and they have set fruit on the first truss but I am a bit further south than you. .

I wonder if the tomatoes in my patch are thinking about a holiday somewhere a little bit further away from the North Pole, cos I know I am

My bush toms 'minibel' have a similar problem, dark patches and tight, curled leaves. They have been outside in hanging baskets for weeks.
I also have 2 tumbler, 3 tumbling tom, 3 roma and 2 gardners delight that are outside
                      and are all fine.

The roma's and GD have yellow leaves at the bottom but all others don't how strange as they are all watered at the same time/freq...

If you have had some of the winds we have had I would suggest that might be one problem, I have had to take mine in to shelter twice in the 3 weeks they have been out.

Another problem I can see is over crowding Tumblers are a very vigorous plant I have similar sized hanging baskets to yours and would only ever have one plant per basket.

Sorry about the standard of the pic but I have just nipped out the back door to take it to illustrate my point. Whilst Growmore is a good base fertilizer it is NPK neutral this plant was fed on Miracle Grow until the toms set and is now fed on Tomorite. Another point on feeding when we grow in containers we have to up the rate of feeding from what is suggested on the bottle. Also remember water first, feed second other wise you will just be washing the feed out of the container.

                        Hope this helps Colin

It is windy where I live and high up so I we are always a few degrees cooler. I have taken my plants inside for now and will repot so only one plant per container and also try miracle grwo, cross my fingers and post a picture in a few weeks time. Thanks for the advice.

Mine have been outside now, out of neccesity, for 5 weeks, and only the odd night in the GH, and there all doing great, especially the Matskotska
