  • My Tom seedlings, sown a week ago. How much longer until I transplant?

    Dear all,

I have got my Tom's to germinate and they are looking good but I am not sure when to move them into their seperate spots.

Would you be kind enough to take a quick look and tell me how much longer you think I should wait before I transplant them into bigger pots.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi

They are looking a bit leggy so I am assuming they are not getting enough light, ordinarily I wait until the second set of leaves appear to repot but as yours are leggy I would repot them now and sink them in the pot so the soil level is almost upto the seed leaves as they will root all the way upto the seed leaves, but they could do with more light, either on a south facing window sill or put a 100w low energy bulb dangling above at about 1foot above the plants.

      Hi Chris,

Thanks alot for the advice, I was getting very worried about the leggy issue. They kind of shot up so quickly.

I am a bit unfortunate with my windows, I have had them in a conservatory but i will try the 100w low energy bulb trick, after replanting them tomorrow.

Thanks again Chris I hope I can get them in more light and growing better

The reason I suggest the 100w low energy bulb is because its an easy way to get a fair amount of light near the leaves where it is needed very cheaply, personally I have all the equipment for growing indoors, hydroponic and all the dedicated grow lights that gow with growing indoors but the equipment isnt cheap, and certainly not worth investing in for a few tomato plants. But I have seen very good results from low energy bulbs - and I am lucky enough to have a recycling shop a couple of streets away that give the eon ones away free.

Thanks Chris I will pop down the shops tomorrow and see if I can get a suitable light fixture for this. Moving forward I want to grow a few things so I might invest in a small indoor kit

I wouldnt pot them up from this for at least 4 weeks. Then when you do re pot them plant them up to the first set of seed leaves.
