  • My Summer....

This home growing malarkey is fab, this year we haven't bought much veg at all, it's all coming to an end but we have been self sufficient in....
Salad leaves (incl. proper little gem and lollo Rosso lettuce)
    Radishes
    Beetroot
    Spring onion
    Tomatoes
Shallots (got enough stored to last all winter)
    French beans
    Sugar snap peas
    Swiss chard
    Mange tout
    Courgettes (too bloody many!)
    Runner beans
    Carrots (and more to come)
Strawberries (we are still harvesting these!)

How amazing is that. We are looking forward to the following for winter...

    Parsnips
    Swede
    Sprouts

Cauli and Cabbage have been a disaster, a lot to learn for next year!

        I honestly can't believe it.
When we started this year I thought that we may get a few tomatoes and some other such veg...
Honestly, I'm such a lazy grower.
Flip me, growing stuff is bloody marvellous!

Its addictive isn't it . Apart from fruit and things like avocadoes and mushrooms that I really can't grow, I haven't bought any veg for over 2 years.

If only I could grow chestnut mushrooms, they are a huge part of my diet.

Even though this year has been really successful we have learned loads and made lots of mistakes that hopefully we can correct next year. I'm looking forward to trying some new things next year as well.

We still buy out of season fruit and some veg and the exotic stuff we can't economically grow, but this time of year we are mainly self sufficient and that lasts about 4 months before dwindling to a lower proportion out of season. Stored Potatoes, onions, garlic and all the frozen excesses of peas/beans etc help keep it going.
A lot to be said for keeping hardy greens in the winter and root crops like carrots can be kept under straw/polythene in the ground and harvested fresh throughout the winter. We are blessed to be able to buy aubergene in January these days.
Yes it's a real pleasure gardening and then the bonus of eating your own produce as well.
