  • My potato tub

    I need some advice please.
Here's a pic of my tatoe tub in an unheated greenhouse. As you can see, the leaves are right up to the top and there is soil in the tub up to about 2/3 up. Should I fill it right up with compost? It's about 60cms high and 40 across.

Fill it up to within an inch or two of the top rim.

I fill to just below the brim - to allow me room to water as the tubers are swelling!

Same here. I have had to move one tub outside 'cos there is no room at the inn. Will just have to cover it if the nights get chilly.

ETA: Woohoo, I am no longer a seedling!

Thank you all. I was just worried in case the swelling tatoes pushed the soil out of the pot - I am such an optimist!

I have a couple of these outdoors and filled just short of the top (about 5-10 cm) but found it difficult to keep up with watering (despite last year's summer- very little rain gets into the barrel past the leaves). This year I cut about 8 or ten 1cm holes in the base in the hopes roots would find their way out into the soil below and leave the plants less vulnerable to a dry day. Here's hoping!!

Yep, get it filled up to about a couple of inches below the rim, leave room for watering, thats what I do and it works for me.
