I planted some red onion sets last September , they have gone through the winter no problem. They had started to swell but I spotted the other day they have sent up seed pods. I removed the pods straight away. Is it worth letting them carry on growing?? Will the bulbs swell to full onion size or should I pull them now and discard ??

It will have been a flower bud you saw developing and were right to nip it off. Onions which have started to bolt can tend to have a thick "neck", can be a little hollow in the centre and so don't store as well. So use these up first and they are fine to eat. -

Yes, quite often you get all onion growing beside the flower stem.Gardening requires a lot of water - most of it in the form of perspiration. Lou Erickson, critic and poetComment
