  • My end of season chilli's

Well this year has been a real learning curve for me in terms of growing chilli peppers and other veggies, I have grown some really tasty chilli peppers this year and I really look forward to growing again next season, however I am down sizing my property and moving in to an apartment so won't have as much room to grow, however we will have a nice south facing balcony so there will be room for a few plants, not sure what types yet but I think some rather small ones, Apache and Scotch Bonnet chilli peppers are definitely going to be on my grow list next season!

I have harvested about 50 chilli's this and they have all been very nice, especially the red Jalapeno's. Here is a picture of a handful of my red chilli peppers that I have left to ripen. I am not sure what the big ones are, I know I didn't order any large types.

p.s. I dunno what the smaller ones are, I'm fairly sure that they are cayenne/Jal crosses because some of them were growing with the Jals. Very very nice though, quite sweet.

They look great. Mine are still on the plant, long and quite red now. Should I be picking them off? how best to store them?

I've been picking and using mine for some time now. I've dried some, and frozen others, chopped and ready to use, as well as freezing in 'curry pack' with other veg. I do like jam with a chilli flavour since trying some when we visited the cheddar gorge, but pricey at £4 a jar. Last year I made a lovely tomato/apple based chilli jam, this year another tasty experiment was to put scotch bonnet or choc habaneros in plum jam. I know some people pickle them, but I don't fancy the vinegar that comes with them.
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I must have picked over a hundred from my 6 plants this year. I hang mine up to dry in a cool dark place (garage).

Why don't you start a chilli exchange group - say 10 in a group, all split their chillis into 10 lots and send a small number of seeds to each person, thus everyone maximises their collection in one fell swoop?
