  • mutated beans?

I've saved and sown my own saved borlotti beans for a couple of years with some success. This year however, a couple of plants have produced what I can only describe as black kidney beans rather than fat, speckled borlottis. Is this mutation? reversion to a previous parent type? Or rogue plants finding their way into my plot courtesy of a resident mouse/squirrel/whatever? And most importantly I suppose, are they still safe to eat??!

You often get rogues in beans. I had a black and a speckled rogue pinto bean; the black one produced all black for me, and I'd sent some to a Grape and they got all white; even though I got no white and the beans were all taken from the same tray of saved beans.

If you want to keep your borlottis the same, separate those and either sow them separately next year [they may revert to type or be something completely different] or eat them. They will be fine to eat.

Some of mine are a lovely purple colour too. They're fine to eat. I especially sowed a teepee of purples only (to have my own purple variety) but this year the seeds are a mix of whites/purples, but I'll do the same next year and one day I'll have my own strain! (and world domination will follow shortly...)
