  • mutant courgette plant

this is the only way i can describe one of my f1 jemmer,i never noticed it before today,i cannot post any pictures as i got no means,or the know how,i have never seen the likes of before,i will do my best to describe,
Normal plants have a leader shoot that is finer, and round in shape at the end, well on this one, what supposed to be the leader shoot, has mutated into a flat with ridges on,aprox.,2in wide, the very tip looks like a sunflower, the length is aprox., 14 in,now this flat, wide stem has some very tiny courgetts, underneith it,and some more trying to grow out from the end that culminates into what looks like a slightly oval sunflower,i just cannot believe what i see,the plant started of growing fine, then appeared to stop growing, and when i next looked at it well,iv'e just tolled you,
has anyone came accross this type of mutation before, can't get over it,the things you see when you not got a camera.
any one else with mutant veggies lol

Have you used any farmyard manure on your plot. A lot of manure has been found to have residual herbiside in it which can result in mutant veg especially in courgettes and tomatoes.

no ,gojiberry,it was 1 that i did not think would survive after the last frost,i put it in a clearing at the end of a tatty row,as the tatties grew they crowded it,poor thing,it had no different treatment than my others, and they are great, the area the tatties are in has not been cultivated for a while,it's needs a good sorting out when they are all harvested

            Re camera

I guess your PC has a USB port.

If you want a simple camera look at

            Amazon.co.uk: Philips Thumbcam DMVC1300K USB Camera & Pen Drive - 1.3MP / Audio / 128MB: Electronics & Photo

Other places have it as well.
I have had one for a while.
It's a camera , video camera with audio, Web cam , memory stick.
Very easy to use and uploads pictures via USB.

thank very much jimmy for the info, but unfortunatly,i'm no good at these modern things, you are talking to a blank wall,my brain will not take it in,one of my sons sees to the computor when i get a problem,i have no idea what a usb port is,i just trickle along,i have read some instructions given to other peeps on other matters of the forum, but alas,i just cannot for the life of me get to grips with any understanding, and i get very upset trying,i do well with what i do as it is,with regards the computor,i have reached my limitations, odd times i've had two of the grandchildren on messenger at the same time,,i get stressed trying to keep up,1 yes that it fine,i thank you again.

an update on my courette freak, the 2 in width is now7in& 1/2,it has grown an inch wider since sunday, the end has split into what looks like 2 flower heads, and 1 of those is starting to split into 2,if it carries on it will end up looking like a fan, with flowers on the edge, these flower looking things are actualy loads of tiny courgetts trying to grow, and getting nowhere,i have not had any manure on the plot,i have also noticed a sunflower with 2 baby flower heads coming directly from under the main flower,on the green ribby bit,all very strange, they both have had,no different treatment from the rest of the plot.

Best not go to sleep at night - that's when they'll become human and replace you! Remember film - invasion of the body snatchers?

It must be quite a sight though. Do you have a mobile with camera - or even a friend with one -I'd love to see what is being described - fascinating.

You could call the local rag so they can print a local interest 'freak' story - they're always after filling column space. Or call the company where you bought the seed and see if they're interested - may even give you some free seed for next year.

I have 3 courgette plants out of 250 that have put out leaders exactly a you describe. I grow three varieties but all three mutants are the same variety - F1 Ambassador. However, they are producing courgettes so I don't really mind what they look like, so long as the courgettes grow and are saleable.
