  • Was it mustard?

Last year (I think) my wife took me to River Cottage, which was a great experience (being able to ask someone, face to face a MILLION gardening questions) - people in the group probably were annoyed at me, as it was almost a 1:1 tuition

anyway, we were free to help outselves to the salad bed, and they recommended a leave, which was really peppery hot. It was longer and broader than a spinnach leaf, dark greeg and in the centre - a flash of red, which speckled off into the green (from the stem to the veins, then tailed off into green).

Bit of a vauge description, but does anyone have an idea of what it is? I'd REALLy like to grow it again (or other suggestions?) As when we had a salad for dinner with it, it was amazing. Really nice to have something quite hot, infact in a salad.

    Thanks!

Sounds very like mustard. I planted the last of a packet of seeds called "oriental salad" mix " (or some-such name) back in September. They are a mix of what sounds very like the leaf you describe with some frilly, curly jobbies thrown in. They are all very peppery and grown as a cut and come again crop.
The blurb on the back of the seed packets will usually tell you if they are a hot or mild mix.

Giant Red is very hardy too, I had some growing all winter when I had it... and it seeds itself everywhere too, which is a bonus (if you like it) or a pain (if you don't)
