  • mushrooms from kits

yesterday i called into b&q to get some cement and on the clearence trolly near the checkout were a load of mushroom kits the box type ones
the only price on them was the full price of £5.98 so i asked the lady on the checkout if they were reduced ? she called the garden section manager who arrived and said let them go 50% reduced so not one to miss a bargain i purchased 3 of them .
as anyone tried these before i have grown them 3 times before with mixed results i would like to know any tips for growing if anyone as any

Mixed results, as you say. Kept them in the dark cupboard under the stairs, misted them with water, kept the lid precisely elevated as instruction, didn't get much at all: definitely not £6 worth of mushrooms. Should make reasonable compost though.

Funnily enough, I called into the local garden centre yesterday and 'fondled' a mushroom kit priced at £2.95...............still put it back though!

Tried them, yes. Do it again, not so sure. We've had three croppings. All very nice, delicious. Was a bit pricey as well. I'm likely to tip out the compost onto the plot at some point. I had three kits, and had they produced more would have been all right.

I've tried mushroom kits and drilling holes in logs for inserting oyster, Lions mane and summat else inoculated plugs but no real success.
But, you've given me an idea! Sainsbury's sell their "Value" mushrooms with soil left on the stalks. Next time I buy some I'm going to stick them in a pot and see what happens. Maybe they'll continue growing, or shed spores. Its worth a try, methinks!

I tried one kit and got nothing. They've got them in poundland this year and i'm not sure whether i'll bother though. (Sounds ridiculous not to risk a pound but i'm on a VERY tight budget this year!)

I got one from poundland, could not resist. So far a lot of white stuff on the top of the compost. no sign of any mushrooms though

That's as far as i got with my Thompson and Morgan kit, then no mushrooms. I'm sure i'll agonise over it and then eventually get one! Where have you kept it>

the three i have tried 1st i kept in the garage this produced a few but in truth i kept forgetting about it and it dried out . the next 2 i kept in the greenhouse under the bench and had better results but i think it was a bit to warm and dry , so i am going to rack my brains and do a bit of googling and see what i can come up with to create a better enviroment for them

I started it off in the sitting room in the box thing they give you with the lid on. Now I have moved it to a shelf under the stairs as it needs to be cooler and dark. there does seem to be getting more white stuff every time I look. So maybe something will happen

We've tried them in the past and found them to be a bit of fun but not remotely cost effective. Nowadays find much better mushrooms in the woods and forests.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I tried growing the B&Q ones 2 years running..........not a sausage or a mushroom. I put it down to my inexperience.

The white stuff on the top of the compost is getting thicker so maybe it will turn into a mushroom

I don't know but are you suppose to cover the white stuff with compost?
