I was watering my plants today when I noticed that a mushroom was growing. I haven't planted any mushrooms. What kind of mushroom is this?

Its hard to identify a mushroom from a photo. There are too many similar ones. I'm not even going to tell you what I think it may be in case you're tempted to eat it.

Hard to tell from the angle on this photo, but doesn't look like an Amanita (i.e. the group to which Deathcaps etc belong). Looks very much like a type of Agaricus (i.e. the group to which button mushrooms and field mushrooms belong, but several of these are also poisonous, so that doesn't mean it's harmless). But it's impossible to be certain without seeing it in the flesh, there are others that look similar to these too.Comment

There is too little detail to say with any confidence. The pale gills and shaggy stem suggest a Hebeloma perhaps, but if it came in compost, and included imported material, it could even be new for Britain. If you still want an ID, why not slice it down the midlle, take a photo of the sliced side, and photos of the gills and the top, and get closer in! You could also take a spore print by placing the cap overnight on a piece of white paper. The colour of the spores will help get it down to genus. What about smell?Comment
