Over the last couple of weeks I have planted out my brassicas and leeks. I have a large compost bin (~ 1 cubic yard) of coarse wood chip that has been there for over 6 months and I could do with the compost space. Is there any reason why I should not use the chips as a mulch around brassicas and to heap up my leeks. I guess the only risk is disease?

No problem whatsoever - I've done the same with fressh wood chip, and the plants are flying.
There is a theory that unrotted chip draws nutrients from the ground as it starts to rot, but I've heard arguements that this only affects the top inch or two, which of course has no effect down where the roots are doing their thing. I don't know the science, but it's always worked well for me. -
What sort of wood is it which has been chipped? If it's conifer type, then it may be a bit on the acid side for brassicas (who prefer the Ph to be more on the alkaline side). I'd be tempted to do a Ph test of it before spreading it around.Comment
