  • moving garlic plants help

Hi and a big thank you in advance for any advice given many thanks

My question is i have garlic growing in very heavy pots outside and are growing very nicely they are about 3 inches approx. But i am now moving and i was wondering is it ok to dig them up out of the pots and put them in smaller more manageable pots for transporting and the to re grow them when i move
    many thanks

Give it a go- I moved some last year and they survived though they weren't enormous (though that could have had other reasons). Have the smaller pots ready, scoop up the plants as carefully as you can in a big lump with lots of soil around them and try to plant them so they are at the same level in the soil. They may get a little grumpy having their roots disturbed but hopefully they will recover- in any case, what have you got to loose?

At around this time of year there are cats and birds pulling up my garlic and onions all the time. They must have smelt spring on the horizon and are getting frisky. 90% of the time pushing them back in the soil will lead to a healthy bulb later on in the year.

I can't see how potting them up and moving them would be any different really.

My garlic is in my old allotment, and I've now moved (but not given up the old plot yet). I planted it last Oct and plan to dig up some and try transplanting it as otherwise I will have missed the boat. It might get a bit of a shock, as at the moment it is on very heavy clay, and the new plot seems to be lovely soil!
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!
          Now a little Shrinking Violet.
