  • Mini Cabbage, will this work?

Just wondering if i can plant some cabbage close together to get mini cabbages, or will they just fail if too close? I have some Hispi F1 i was thinking of trying it with if its worth a go. How close is too close?

    Cheers!

I don't know for sure, but I've a suspicion they might not form heads if they are grown too close together. They will still grow, but you will get more of a "spring greens" effect. I think that's why there are special varieties of mini-cauli, like "Igloo".

I'm prepared to be proved wrong, though!

Hispi are ideal for close planting. Planting 10" apart will give you mini veg. but allowing
12" apart either way would be better.

Tis all about how many you are feeding

If you have a big family and want a large cabbage, they need to be spaced apart as suggested - if you have a small family to feed and just want to pick leaves as and when, then bung 'em closer together.

As we are two in the Piskie household I plant close together thereby getting more leaves to pick over a longer period of time. If I were to let it 'heart-up' I would end up wasting most of it

Thanks everyone, very useful. We are two + 10 month old, which is why i was after more and smaller rather than fewer and bigger. Just need to fill the next raised bed ready for em now
