  • Might bring tears to my eyes..

Whilst sorting my Onion sets last night in readiness for planting tomorrow hopefully, I realised I might be developing an Allium variety affliction

I do like my alliums, so tomorrow will plant sets of:

Red Onions- I will be sowing- HyRed (heat treated) & Red Karmen.
White Onions- I will be sowing Stuttgarter, Stuttgarter Giant, Fen Early (Heat prepared), Hytech (Heat prepared), Fen Globe (Heat prepared)

This is in addition to the F1 Hi-ball I have growing well from Seed (sown last October), the over-wintered Radar sets, and the Setton sets I took a chance on planting on Feb 5th (they are flying due to the mild weather)…I also have a few Ailsa Craig grown from seed to stick somewhere!!

Shallots, well that’s nearly as bad with overwintered Griselle and spring planted Picasso, Red Sun, Jermor and Golden Gourmet all in and thriving already...

Garlic, well I managed to restrain myself with only 4 varities plus some Elephant Garlic...
I dream of a better tomorrow, where chickens can cross the road and not be questioned about their motives....

I'm also an alliophile (is that a word). Counting all the salad, pickling and maincrop onions I have eleven varieties on the go at the moment.

Onions, don't ya just love em.

Good to know I am not alone....As for Spring onions,I won't say how many seed packs of different varieties I have.

I reckon I've gone a bit onion mad this year too 5 varieties of sets, 5 different varieties of seed-sown, 5 varieties of garlic, banana shallots from seed. And I haven't sown the pickling-sized ones yet, or salad onions, or leeks

I fell deeply, deeply in love with pickled shallots last year after planting a solitary bag of wizened little Golden Gourmet I bought on impulse because the were on offer for a pound a bag.
Never tried them prior to that. This year I've tried some from seed and planted sets as a back up. Just Electric and Sturton onions and garlic otherwise...Restrained aren't I!

My lot like onions, but they do expect other stuff to go with them, so I've only got 2 types of shallots, red and white onion sets, some red florence from seed, one type of spring onions and one type of garlic. Actually, until I started listing them, I didn't realise I had so many, no wonder I had to put some sets between my strawberries
I could not live without a garden, it is my place to unwind and recover, to marvel at the power of all growing things, even weeds!

I created a new Allium bed for this year and thereby reduced our lawn by another bit
Still plenty there to mow tho
