  • mid height pea variety?

My back doesn't much like picking the low varieties of peas
This year I've grown Alderman which is lovely but with the cane A-frame they seem to take up a lot of room, and throw a lot of shade on my small plot.
Can anybody recommend a good waist-high variety? one that grows about 3ft would be ideal

Maybe a simplistic notion here but, could you not just nip the growing tips out when the Alderman have grown to your desired height ?

Currently I am growing some badly behaved Kelvidon Wonders, the packet says they only grow to 600mm mine are currently 1.4metres high ,so they will be getting the tip nip this week & see if it works

At last - a reason to recommend Salmon Flowered - they all come at the top of the plant rather than at different heights.

Or - plant your tall peas in a block and put a cane to head height in the very centre, and one at each corner. Put twine round the canes at 1 ft intervals. When the peas get to the top of the chimney - as that's what it ends up being like, stop the plants and they will throw out some sideshoots. Plus no shadowing of your other plants.

I to suffer with a 'back' my answer was to make a true raised bed i.e. about 2ft 6" off the ground. I get about 90 plants in my two boxes, the first planting is just about coming to an end but with Kelverton Wonder the next lot are in their 3" pots waiting to go in.
