  • Which mesh and what size?

I have a 6ft x 3ft raised bed I am about to plant out some Kale in. I did this last year without any protection and although it was pretty successful it was a constant battle against caterpillars and whitefly that I dont really dont want to have to fight again.

I have decided to invest in some form of mesh to cover them with, but I am a bit unsure about which type I need. I am hoping I can just lay it over the bed rather than needing some form of framework, but I am unsure how much I will need to cover my 6 x 3 bed?

Not much point in just laying it over your bed, your kale should grow quite tall and you need to keep the netting off the plants.

You need close mesh netting, such as Enviromesh or debris netting.

Enviromesh or veggiemesh are best - cos whitefly can get through debris netting
canes with youurt pots/bottles on top will lift the netting if you don't want to actually build a frame.

PMW I use debris netting for my tall Tuscan Kale, the cage is made from 4 brush handles with plastic water pipe to make the arch, here's a photo :-
