  • MDPE Pipe

Has anyone ever made a cage out of it and how did it go? What netting did you use?

Not personally but I've seen plenty around and they look great. People just used rebar pushed into the soil at a slight angle (80 degress??) for the foundation tubes and pushed the pipe over them. Attached baton for a ridge and also one half way up each side. Because there is virtually no wind resistance (like a DIY tunnel would have) they are very stable and need no more anchoring. They used all sorts for netting but I think old sports netting would be good. My local Lidl had big pieces of netting for 5.99 recently, sold as 'pond' netting. Picked up a couple for whenever I get the time to build a cage.

Chap on my site has, using the yellow one (gas?) He used debris netting. I'll take a photo later on in the week when I pop down again.

Oops, forgot they did use diagonal bracing from each of the 4 end hoops down at 45 degress. And one guy put in a gable end with a door but you could just lift the netting to keep it simpler.

I have done. Now I don't know if it's me being lazy or that I've not put it together the best way, but I find it a faff for when it comes to weeding, I have to disassemble the whole thing and then put it back together.

I was thinking of building a structure similar to that of the Walk in Wonderwall -Type into Google. The prices for it seem a little steep for what it is. But am unsure whether or not it would collapse when i put the hoops into the ground.

The idea is still very much just in my head...though needs to be getting started...My Dad is hopefully going to help me build a polytunnel type thing. The only hoop things I have are really short, so I've suggested to him we could build the main structure from timber and then somehow attatch metal rod things to the top and then slot the piping on the top.

I raise my hands at not being ver good at DIY, so this might not work.

Oooh im definately no good at DIY. This cage will be to cover my Brassicas as I already have a build a ball cage which crumbled under the snow we had. I was thinking of putting poles into the ground and cutting the MDPE into lengths and bending them into hoops and putting netting overtop. It may mean I need two tunnels or I may get away with one.

We'll have to compare pics of our botched jobs.

I did a DIY tunnel last year...
                    My DIY Polytunnel - boards.ie

It would just be a matter of replacing the plastic with netting and do away with most of the internal woodwork.
I'd say the extent of my DIY before I started this stretched to hanging pictures and changing light bulbs
