  • Maskotka tomatoes

    Hi

I have some Maskotka 'tumbling' variety tomatoes on my kitchen windowsill, which are looking pretty healthy, and growing upwards pretty quickly! I have 3 questions:
Do they grow tall and then 'flop over' which is how they tumble?
Should I only re-pot once I can see the roots at the bottom of the pot?
To harden them off, shall I just move into my plastic unheated greenhouse, undo the flaps during the day for a week or so?

    Thanks in advance,
    Graham

They aren't tumblers, they're an upright bush type

I, ve got some of them on the go also, although mine are a bit smaller than yours ! The tumbelers i had last year just did there on thing and eventually bent over and grew lots of shoots ! Yep i would re pot up to the next size pot when they show roots ( I do ! ) You can bury them up to the first set of leaves to give them more stabity and strength. I am hardening mine off now and taking them in and out every day for 7-10 days ! Hope this helps, happy growing !!

You're completely correct, I don't know why I even put that in!

Maskotka are described as a good variety for hanging baskets and the like so I'd have thought that they'd tumble as shown in the piccie attached - Tomato : Maskotka (Seeds)

Am growing a few myself. They're bushier than yours but still upright. I planted a couple in a hanging basket in the greenhouse on Saturday so will have to wait and see.

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

            My maskotka's are huge....and tumbling

I have 17 of these plants and they grow quite big. The largest are around 3 and a half feet and have bent over despite my attempts to tie them to stakes. They currently reside on a few old shelves in the garden and are definitely ''tumbling''. I planted some of them straight into the ground and they too have ended up growing across the ground instead of staying upright.

Yes they are a bush so the only thing you can do is to shove some canes in and let them lean against them rather than try to stake them.

I've always grown them in hanging baskets and just let them tumble where they want.

My mum gave me some she got as free seeds (GW?) one in a basket has produced loads of tomatoes. Mum was pretty sure they were a basket variety (and I NEVER argue with my mother!) Would definately grow again..........in a basket

I have some ripening outside. They seem to have no problem with Cumbrian weather, even in a year like this. Very impressed with them and will definitely grow again.
