  • Marrows

One of the ladies at work has asked if I have space would I mind growing her some marrows. I am happy to do so but not sure what size crop you get per plant or indeed what size bed they will need.

If anyone could enlighten me that would be great.

I personally don't like them....probably because I don't know how to cook them properly!

Marrows are just oversized courgetts, so of you are growing them just let some keep on growing but it will slow down the production of more little courgetts.

Marrows are the courgettes you forget to harvest - the ones that lurk under the leaves and leap out at you when you least expect it

I have never grown marrows per se, but I do grow courgettes and every year a good few courgettes escape and end up as large marrows. I grow 6 plants and that keeps me and my husband in courgettes all summer (for eating and making into soup and ratatouille for the freezer) as well as our extended families and neighbours and anyone else I can give a bucketful to

Near the end of summer I just let three or four courgettes grow to marrow size for jam, chutney and preserves. I love marrow and ginger jam especially.

I do grow them separately as I eat courgettes off my nice neat bush type plants but also usually have a couple of trailing type ones which I let produce the bigger marrow fruits. Find this works well for me but the trailing ones in particular really take up a heck of a lot of room.
