    Marabells' sprouting

    Hi, I need some advice. I've looked all over for some marabell seed potatoes but the only place I have found them is on a Dutch web site. I don't really want to buy these.

    Over christmas I had bought some marabell to use and today when I went to clear stuff away there was still a few tates left and they had all got tiny little white sprouts on them.
    Can I try and chit these like ordinary seed potatoes and plant them, or is there a reason why I should'nt ? Some one told me you don't plant ordinary tates they have to be seed ones, Is this true ?

    Seed tatties are said to disease free but I've always planted shop bought spuds. Go for it.

      Seed potatoes are sold as virus free. Potatoes used as seed from other sources may not be virus free. I personally have no problems using spuds from the kitchen as seed, indeed my Charlottes are usually kitchen leftovers which have sprouted under the sink. Some kitchen spuds may be treated with an inhibitor which prevents sprouting but as yours are already sprouting..............

          Rub the sprouts/chits off for the time being & store the tatties, it's a bit early to be chitting spuds. They will come back.

            Where, or should I say what temperature/light level should they be stored?

              Do they 100% come back as i felt awful today when i knocked a load off never knew if they came back

              P.s i always plant shop bought, always got better results, but that might be because they are chitted properly. I have heard they will give slightly less per tuber/potato than seed potatoes!!

              I grow i mix of both each year.
              I grow 70% for us and 30% for the snails, then the neighbours eats them

                  Yes the chits will regrow, plus don't forget if you get more than one eye with chits, the spud can be cut into pieces as long as each piece has an eye. So in theory you could get 4 or 5 plants out of one spud.

                    I am a cutter but was not sure if they grew back 100% thanks BM

                    Ps others that might be reading, you should really dry out the side you cut before planting

                      and if they are shop bought spuds, give 'em a good scrub to remove any inhibitors.
